I did a little work at the side for the shortmovie “Karakul” by a beginning director in Munich. Release will be soon.
There were a few short scenes where I had to do some smoke and fire.
I just got the clean footage with some colour correction, then modelled a car in 3dsMax, lit it up with FumeFX, rendered the whole thing and did some compositing in AfterEffects (mainly some masks, surrounding lights and mirroring in the eyes of the protagonist).
Although it was nobudget-work, I really had a nice time doing the first VFX in HD-quality.
It’s funny that I hadn’t the most problems with creating the effects but matching the right angle, focal distance and field of view of the footage with the camera in 3dsMax. (I really had no information about the camera adjustments and it drove me nuts to tweak around for hours until I got it right)
I’m looking forward to more of such things soon at my internship at the VFX-Department at ARRI in Munich.
So until then (in september) I will do much more tutorials on that stuff and will update this site monthly to document my skills.
So here are the best scenes (a bit short but hey for the first time it’s looking quite good in my opinion):
